Khumo Shongwe

Khumo Shongwe

Khumo Shongwe has worked in a wide variety of capacities including transformation, HR consulting, HR strategic planning, BEE and related community empowerment, HR turn-around projects, sustainable development, shared services applications, and rollouts of information technology systems.

Khumo has sat on several boards, including Royal Bafokeng Holdings, Impala Platinum, Astrapak, Fraser Alexander, Vodacom South Africa, MB Technologies Lebone 11 College of the Bafokeng, among others. She is a fellow of the Africa Leadership Initiative (ALI). She is also an alumna of the University of Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership. Her formal qualifications are Journalism (Rhodes); BSc (Med) Hons (Psychology); MSc (Clinical Psychology) (MEDUNSA) and Executive Masters in Consulting and Coaching for Change (HEC Paris and University of Oxford).

Khumo is a businesswoman involved in her investments in the financial services, hospitality and the education sector. She also participates on Boards as an independent non-executive director.

Edwin Cameron

Edwin Cameron retired as a Judge in August 2019, after 25 years’ service, the last eleven in South Africa's highest court, the Constitutional Court. Before that, he served in the Supreme Court of Appeal for eight years, and the High Court for six.

He was educated at Pretoria Boys High School, Stellenbosch and as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. During apartheid he was a human rights lawyer.

He has fought for LGBTI+ equality and helped achieve the historic inclusion of sexual orientation in the South African Constitution. As someone living with HIV, he was a fierce critic of President Mbeki's AIDS denialist policies. His two prize-winning memoirs, Witness to AIDS (2005) and Justice: A Personal Account (2014), have been translated into German, Korean and Chinese. He holds honorary degrees from seven universities. In 2019 he was elected Chancellor of Stellenbosch University and appointed Judicial Inspector of Correctional Services.

Witkoppen Clinic’s board of directors meet quarterly. Subcommittees of the board consist of an executive committee, audit committee, remuneration committee and a fundraising committee.

Dr Penny Moumakwa

Penny Moumakwa is a medical doctor with extensive experience at an executive level within the private and public healthcare sectors. She is the founding CEO of Mohau Equity Partners, which focuses on impact investing to scale and develop SME companies into future industry leaders.

Penny was previously an executive director of Discovery Health and an executive committee member of Discovery Holdings.

Andrew Hadfield is a tech entrepreneur with more than 20 years’ experience in the South African entrepreneurship space. Alongside Witkoppen Clinic, he serves on the Board of forgood (SA's largest employee volunteering platform provider) amongst other projects.

Dr Jean Bassett

With more than 30 years’ experience as a medical practitioner, Jean Bassett, has geared her career towards improving the quality of healthcare for those living in disadvantaged circumstances.

She has worked at Witkoppen Clinic for 22 years and played a key role in starting up its HIV counselling and testing programme. She is a recipient of the Paul Harris Award acknowledging her outstanding contribution to the community.

Arthur Christie

Arthur Christie is a retired chartered accountant. He qualified as a chartered accountant from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1967.

After two-years working in London, he worked in commerce and industry in South Africa before retiring from Barloworld Ltd in 2004.

Bongani Luthuli

Bongani Luthuli has been an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa since 2014. He is a Partner of Employment Law, Benefits, Industrial Relations & Discrimination at Cowan-Harper-Madikizela Attorneys.

Bongani graduated at the University of Johannesburg with an LLB Degree and further obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Corporate Law specialising in the Companies Act 1998.

Dr Ndileka Mbete is an independent healthcare strategy consultant. She qualified as a medical doctor and furthered her education with an MBA. Having worked in the public, private and NPO sectors in healthcare for over 20 year, she has gained vast and diverse experience in healthcare management.

She is passionate about improving the access, quality and cost of healthcare through innovative delivery and funding models.

Thabiso Mphehlo

Thabiso Mphehlo has worked at various State Health Institutions with particular experience in the South African Military Health Services. He has also worked at Discovery Health’s Integrated Care, Access and Innovation Division and at the Council for Medical Schemes as a Clinical Analyst.

He joined the Government Employees Medical Scheme in 2016 as a Senior Manager responsible for Healthcare Provider Networks and Provider Relations.
